What
is the title of the film, when was it released, who directed it and who stars in
it?
The title of the film is
called "The Hunger Games"
The director is called
Gary Ross
The two main characters
are:
Jennifer Lawrence-
Katniss Everdeen
Josh Hutcherson – Peeta
Mellark
What
is the sub-genre of the film? What signifiers reveal this to the audience?
The
sub-genre of the film is also romance because the two main characters are
a girl and a boy which is a part of a typical "love story"
What is the plot of the film? Is this a conventional action/adventure plot? Why?
The
film is about a 16-year-old girl, Katniss Everdeen, who lives in
the nation of Panem in North America. The Capitol, a highly advanced
metropolis, exercises political control over the rest of the nation. The Hunger
Games are an annual event in which one boy and one girl aged 12–18 from
each of the twelve districts surrounding the Capitol are selected by lottery to
compete in a televised battle to the death.
Who is the protagonist of the film? What is
he/she like? Is he/she a conventional hero? Why?
The
protagonist is Katniss everdeen, her character comes across as shy and quiet in
the beginning of the movie but towards the ending she becomes
superhero-like.
She
isn’t a conventional hero since typical heros in the movies are
usually undercover and katniss isn’t.
Who is the antagonist in the film? What is
he/she like? Is he/she a conventional villain? Why?
The
antagonists are Cato the boy tribute, and Clove the girl tribute from
district 2.
They
are not conventional villains because usual villains have a grudge or
have a history with the protagonist but in this case the villains and
hero are forced to fight until death.
Are there any other conventional characters in
the film? Who are they and why are they conventional?
Primrose everdeen- who
is katniss sister which is a big part of the movie since it was primrose
originally to be in the hunger games but being her older sister katniss
“volunteered as tribute”
Gale Hawthorne- is
Katniss Everdeen's best friend and hunting partner.
What are the main signifiers used in the film to reveal it is
action/adventure to the audience? Think about locations used and the
mise-en-scene.
The main point is where it is set – its set in a fictional place in north
America.
Suzanne Collins has said that Panem is supposed to be like ancient Rome:
"Panem itself comes from the Latin expression 'Panem et Circenses' which
translates into 'Bread and Circuses'.
Think about one of the action-sequences in the film.
What diegetic and non-diegetic sounds do you hear? Are these
conventional?
Diegetic = the characters in the film can hear this sound
Non-diegetic = only the audience can hear this. E.g. voice-over,
soundtrack
In the part where they
all go to fight in the actual hunger games I mostly hear non-diegetic
sounds which is suspenseful and
also scary music and the diegetic sounds I hear are the
tributes firing guns and
pleading not to die.
Think about one of the action-sequences in the
film. What type of
camera shots do You see?
Is the editing slow or fast-paced? Why do you
think this is?
Most of the camera shots
are either close ups or long shots to show the audience the
reaction of the
characters and to show where the characters are or how they are running.
The editing is mostly
face paced to show fear and show how scared the characters are.
Does the film break any conventions of the action/adventure
genre?
If yes, why do you
think it has done this? If no, why do you think it has stuck to
the
conventions?
I think it hasn’t broke
the convention of a action/adventure genre because most if these
movies have the same
conventions “the hunger games” has such as:
- A romance
- Villain(s)
- Heros
- Unusual settings
